Microsoft’s October 28 release provides a useful case for separating operating growth from the cash needed to support it. The quarter ended September 30, 2026 is fiscal Q1 2027, not calendar Q1 2027. Keeping those labels straight matters when comparing companies.

Two calculations, two questions
Operating income divided by revenue gives a 49.76% margin, compared with 48.87% a year earlier. This calculation asks how much operating profit the reported revenue supported.
A different calculation subtracts cash additions to property and equipment from operating cash flow. It yields $18,633 million, versus $25,663 million previously: a 27.39% decline. The cash property-investment line increased 102.99%.
That residual is explicitly our simple calculation. It is not a company-defined comprehensive free-cash-flow measure and does not include every economic obligation associated with capital investment, such as the full effect of non-cash asset additions or financing arrangements.
What the divergence means
There is no accounting contradiction in rising operating profitability alongside a falling cash residual. Investment spending and the expense recognised in current earnings follow different timing. The research question is whether additional investment eventually produces enough durable cash generation, rather than whether the larger spending number is automatically favourable or unfavourable.
A valuation exercise should make the investment path explicit. Assuming today’s operating growth persists while immediately reducing investment to a much lower level would need justification. Equally, assuming all current investment repeats forever would be another unsupported shortcut.
What to check next
Track the definition and timing of cash investment, asset additions and associated future expenses. Compare multi-quarter patterns before interpreting one quarter’s working-capital movements as a permanent change. No stock price, consensus estimate or valuation multiple is used here; these accounts alone do not establish whether Microsoft shares are cheap or expensive.
